Q: What do you charge?
A: We charge by the square foot. You are welcome to call or email us for a free estimate.

Q: How long will my carpet take to dry, and do I have to stay off of it?
A: Drying time depends on some variables such as the thickness and level of soiling of pile and fibers, the weather conditions and the air circulation in your home.  The normal drying time is 24 hours. It will be a little damp, but you can walk on it as soon as we are done.  Make sure your feet are clean - the wet carpet will be more susceptible to dirt.  Just be careful not to slip when going from damp carpet onto a hard surface.

Q: Can you guarantee the stains on my rugs, carpet and upholstery will come out?
A: Unfortunately we can't. No company can, really. There are too many factors involved. We always guarantee we'll try our absolute best, though.  Our aim is exactly the same as yours – to get it as perfect as possible.

Q: Can you get the pet odor out of my rugs, carpet and upholstery?
A: Pet odor is a very common problem that could be much more complex than on first impression. Pet urine can easily soak through the backing of the carpet into the padding underneath. In more severe cases the urine can penetrate into the sub-floor beneath the padding. This creates a problem that is multi-layered. The urine also provides for the growth of bacteria. This in turn contributes to a worsening of the odor problem and can contribute to permanent color loss of the carpet fiber. To eliminate this problem, the urine must be removed or neutralized from each of the layers affected. If the contamination is limited to only the face yarn of the carpet then the cleaning itself may effectively remove the odor. In more severe cases a urine neutralizer may be applied. In the most severe cases, replacement of the carpet padding, treatment of the under-side of the carpet and the sub-floor may be required.

Q: Do I have to be present the entire time that the cleaning takes place?
A: No.  An advantage to using Fred Mason and Son is our honest reputation in the community for over 40 years. We can adapt to your needs. Many clients choose to be home during the cleaning. Others personally meet us at the job and then leave when we are ready to begin cleaning.  And some leave a key and instructions for us. No matter what your preference, we will still provide the same honest and quality service and speak with you personally about your concerns, pricing and instructions for proper drying.

Q: I vacuum every week. Why do I need to have my carpets professionally cleaned?
A: Vacuuming is the best way to remove dirt, dust and debris from the surface of your carpet, but even if you vacuum every day, carpet pollutants are pushed down to the base of the carpet every time someone walks on it. Once dirt, pollen, dander and other contaminants go below the surface, they become trapped at the base of the carpet until more intense cleaning methods, such as carpet steam cleaning, are used.

Q: How often should my carpet be cleaned?
A: Doctors recommend that people with allergies and asthma wash their carpeting, drapes and upholstered furniture every 3 to 6 months. Vacuuming alone will not do the trick. Professional cleaning is the key to killing dust mites which is the number one cause of allergens in the indoor environment. We recommend cleaning residential carpet with medium traffic area at least once a year.

Q: Do you move any furniture?
A: We will move any furniture that is needed in order to achieve the best cleaning results!

Q: What are those funny things (blocks or tabs) that you put under my furniture?
A: They are protective coasters and are there to protect your carpet from rust or furniture stains. You should wait until your carpet is completely dry before removing them.

Q: When I have my upholstery cleaned, how long do I have to leave my cushions propped?
A: Your cushions will be propped for better drying, and paper will be placed between contacting surfaces to prevent color transfer. You should leave everything in place until upholstery is completely dry.

Q: Do you clean Berber carpet?
A: Yes, we have a great deal of experience with Berber carpet. Berber is a weave, not a particular type of fabric. It is simply a type of loop construction carpet that has face yarns which can be made of olefin, nylon, wool or a blend. Berber requires a more thorough cleaning than other carpets because more “flushing” action needs to take place to get under, around and through the loops. This also necessitates more vacuum passes with the wand in order to allow the carpeting to dry as soon as possible.

Q: Will my carpet get dirty more quickly after it has been cleaned?
A: When a trained professional cleans your carpet, the majority of soap residues are removed, so resoiling is normally not an issue. Several years ago true soaps derived from coconut oils were used to clean carpet. These soaps were very difficult to remove and left residues behind to attract soil. Synthetic detergents are used today, and these detergents rinse more easily with water. However, this does not ensure that all detergents will not resoil.

Q: I have allergies and am worried if the cleaners that you use will bother me.
A: The solutions that we use are environmentally safe and are safe for people with allergies, children and pets. Rugs and furniture can harbor soil and other contaminates. Properly cleaning your carpet and furniture will remove the built up soil and contaminates to improve indoor air quality and reduce allergens.

Q: What does 'cleaning to the standards' mean?
A: We surpass the standards established in 1992 by representatives from the carpet manufacturing industry, the carpet cleaning industry, and the federal government for the carpet cleaning industry. These standards are now referred to as the Soo1-92 standards.
It was agreed that each cleaning process should include these common steps:
Pre-Vacuum
Pre-treat spots, stains and heavily soiled areas
Hot Water Extraction
A thorough rinse
Furniture Moving
Complete Drying within 24 hours

Cleaning your carpet in accordance to these industry standards will help assure that you'll get a quality cleaning job. In addition, we believe that the expertise of the technician is crucial to a successful end result.

Q: Will cleaning my carpet destroy the soil and stain treatment?
A: No. Carpet cleaning should not affect these warranties. Soil treatments can be removed through normal foot traffic.

Q: Will hot water extraction (steam cleaning) damage my carpet?
A: No. Hot water extraction is the method preferred by Shaw Industries and many other carpet manufacturers. It is considered by most to be the best method of removing embedded soil and other contaminants.

Q: What kind of chemicals do you use?
A: We use top-of-the-line cleaning products consistent with industry standards and manufacturers recommendations. Our products are environmentally friendly and OSHA and EPA compliant.
